The Saltwater Creek Basketry Group is comprised of a group of enthusiastic basket makers who meet on the last Saturday morning of every month at the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre - Amphitheatre, Collins Avenue, Edge Hill, Cairns, Queensland, from 9.30 am - 12.30 pm.
The group has a strong emphasis on making baskets and sculptural forms made from natural materials which are abundantly found in the Cairns region, the use of inflorescences (palm flowers) predominates. Along with natural fibres items are also constructed from synthetic materials, and combinations of both.
The scope of basketry is very wide and our goal is to learn, explore and develop knowledge of traditional and contemporary basketry techniques. The group is also keen to cross over between traditional skills, craft, and contemporary art.
This is an informal open group, and all interested people are very welcome to attend. Beginners, basket makers from way back, artists, anyone with an interest in basketry techniques are all welcome.
